Rupali Chakankar Resigns As NCP Women’s State President Amid Ashok Kharat Row
Pune, March 27, 2026: Rupali Chakankar has resigned from her post as the Women’s State President of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), following growing controversy linked to the Ashok Kharat case.
In her resignation letter, Chakankar stated that the decision was taken after discussions with party leader and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar.
Second Resignation Amid Controversy
Chakankar had earlier stepped down as the chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission after videos showing her association with self-styled godman Ashok Kharat went viral, sparking widespread outrage.
While she initially cited “personal reasons” for her earlier resignation, her latest move to quit the party post has intensified political discussions across the state.
Mounting Pressure Within and Outside Party
The controversy surrounding Kharat, whom Chakankar had reportedly considered her “guru,” led to criticism from multiple quarters. Opposition parties and even some leaders within the NCP had demanded her resignation, increasing pressure on the party leadership.
Chakankar Denies Any Wrongdoing
In her letter to Sunetra Pawar, Chakankar maintained that she has no connection with any alleged financial or illegal activities related to Kharat.
“I have clarified my stand from the very first day. I have no direct or indirect involvement in any wrongdoing. The truth will come out during the investigation,” she stated.
She also expressed concern over what she described as “baseless allegations” circulating in the media without evidence.
Calls for Fair Probe
Chakankar has previously urged authorities, including the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and Director General of Police, to ensure a fair and transparent investigation into the matter.
She further clarified that although she regarded Kharat as a spiritual guide, she was unaware of his alleged activities. Upon learning about them, she claimed to have demanded strict action against him from Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The resignation has now shifted focus to the NCP leadership, with attention on Sunetra Pawar’s next steps and the party’s response to the ongoing controversy.
