Veteran Indian Opener Shikhar Dhawan Retires from All Forms of Cricket

Shikhar Dhawan, a prominent figure in Indian cricket, has announced his retirement from all forms of the game. The 38-year-old veteran opener made the decision public through a heartfelt post on social media platform ‘X’, marking the end of a remarkable 14-year international career.

Debuting in 2010 against Australia in an ODI match at Visakhapatnam, Dhawan represented India in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is. Known for his aggressive batting style and consistency, he amassed 6,793 runs in ODIs at an average of 44.11, alongside 2,315 runs in Tests with an average of 40.61. His ODI performances were particularly noteworthy, highlighted by his standout role in ICC tournaments, including the 2015 World Cup where he was India’s highest scorer.

Reflecting on his journey, Dhawan expressed gratitude for the support from fans and the opportunity to represent his country. “As I close this chapter of my cricketing journey, I carry with me countless memories and gratitude. Thank you for your love and support! Jai Hind!” he wrote. Dhawan also emphasized the importance of moving forward, stating, “It’s important to turn the page to move forward in life and that’s why I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket. I am leaving with peace in my heart that I played so long for India.”

Dhawan’s legacy includes being one half of India’s second-most successful ODI opening pair with Rohit Sharma, scoring 5,148 runs together. His memorable innings, like the 137 against South Africa in the 2015 World Cup and 190 against Sri Lanka in Galle, are celebrated highlights of his career.

Despite his formidable career, Dhawan faced challenges towards the end, including being sidelined due to injuries and the emergence of younger players like Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan.

As Dhawan steps away from cricket, he leaves behind a legacy of resilience, skill, and dedication to the sport. His departure marks the end of an era for Indian cricket fans worldwide.
