The India batter suffered a laceration of the spleen while taking a catch in Sydney; underwent emergency procedure to stop internal bleeding.

India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is set to be out of action for at least two months after sustaining a serious spleen injury during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground earlier this month. The 30-year-old suffered a laceration of the spleen and internal bleeding after landing awkwardly while completing a difficult catch of Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

According to reports, Iyer fainted in the dressing room shortly after the incident and was rushed to a Sydney hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The cricketer underwent an interventional trans-catheter embolisation, a minimally invasive procedure in which a small catheter is used to block the bleeding artery and control internal haemorrhage.

Out of Action for Upcoming Series

The injury means Iyer will miss India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa in November-December, and there are doubts over his availability for the bilateral ODI series against New Zealand scheduled for January next year.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the nature of Iyer’s injury in an official statement, saying,
“Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding on 25th October during the third ODI against Australia. The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation.”

A follow-up scan conducted on October 28 showed significant improvement, and the BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his recovery.

Emotional Support and Clarification

Sources indicate that the BCCI is arranging for Iyer’s sister to travel to Sydney to be by his side during his recovery period. Earlier, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that Iyer had not undergone surgery, countering some initial media reports.

The setback comes at a crucial time for Iyer, who had been regaining form after a series of injuries in recent years. However, with his condition improving steadily, team officials are optimistic that he will make a full recovery before the 2025 season gets underway.
