In Pune’s Market Yard area, a tragic incident occurred where a young man lost his life in a two-wheeler accident due to an unnoticed speed breaker at night. This incident highlights the growing concern about dangerous traffic conditions that cause injuries and health issues in the city.

Pune currently has 625 speed breakers, which raises questions about their safety and whether they adhere to regulations. However, the Municipal Corporation has not provided clear answers regarding measures taken to address these issues.

To regulate traffic, the Indian Road Congress (IRC) has established norms that specify the dimensions and locations of speed breakers. The Municipal Corporation has implemented these guidelines on major city roads to control vehicle speed and ensure pedestrian safety.

Unfortunately, unauthorized and unscientific speed breakers such as high barriers and rumble strips have emerged in various areas like Kondhwa, Sukhsagarnagar, NIBM Undri road and Dhankawadi. These obstacles not only disrupt traffic but also lead to accidents, as many fail to comply with IRC standards.

Despite identifying 627 speed breakers over a month-and-a-half-long survey, the Municipal Corporation lacks information on these dangerous or unscientific speed breakers. The Road Department acknowledges the issue but has not taken concrete steps to remove these hazardous obstacles.

These unauthorized barriers, made of rubber, thick fibre, concrete, asphalt, or bricks, contribute to accidents and health problems. Motorists face harassment, with an increase in neck and spine ailments due to collisions with these roadblocks.

Residents are urging the Municipal Corporation to promptly remove dangerous barriers and take legal action against those responsible.
