Varandha Ghat Closed For Heavy Vehicles For 3 Months Due To Landslide Risk And Road Widening Work
Pune, June 18, 2025 — In light of increasing rainfall and the risk of landslides, the Varandha Ghat route from Pune to Mahad via Bhor has been closed to heavy vehicles for the next three months. The Pune District Collector has issued an official order to this effect.
The decision follows concerns over frequent incidents of landslides, road sinking, and soil erosion during the monsoon season. Varandh Ghat, a key route connecting Pune with the Konkan region, has been deemed unsafe for large vehicles due to its narrow, slippery roads and ongoing widening work. Heavy rain has already made the stretch muddy and hazardous.
The order also specifies that during red and orange alerts issued by the Meteorological Department, all types of vehicles — including light vehicles — will be prohibited from using the ghat.
Located approximately 10 km in length, the scenic Varandh Ghat is known for its natural beauty, waterfalls, and dense forests. However, during the monsoon, the risk of sudden landslides and tree falls increases significantly.
The closure is aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of commuters until road conditions stabilize and improvement work is completed.
