Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has launched its ‘Community Notes’ program in India, aiming to combat misinformation by empowering users to participate in fact-checking tweets shared on the platform.

This initiative, announced on Thursday via X’s affiliate handle, invites new contributors from India to join the effort.

Community Notes seeks to address misinformation by enlisting individuals from diverse backgrounds as note authors. Rather than endorsing specific viewpoints, the platform relies on collective input from contributors to assess the credibility of content. To qualify as a contributor, accounts must meet specific criteria, including adherence to X’s Rules, membership for at least six months, and verification through a trusted carrier.

Contributors can add notes by selecting “Write a Community Note” from the ••• menu on a post. After answering multiple-choice questions and providing contextual information, the note will be available on the Community Notes site for review and rating by other contributors.

Notes indicating potential misinformation will be displayed on the post if rated as helpful by enough people. Conversely, notes confirming the accuracy of a post will be shown as additional information but will not be displayed on the post unless deemed helpful.

Helpful notes will be displayed on X as context, and contributors will earn Writing Impact. Contributors retain the option to delete their notes at any time.

X has implemented restrictions on the number of note proposals contributors can submit within a 24-hour period to maintain note quality and prevent spamming. Through Community Notes, X aims to foster a more informed digital environment by empowering users to actively combat misinformation.
