Pune: The recent hiring spree of Zomato has caused a stir at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi campus. The online food delivery giant made headlines by offering a staggering salary package of Rs 1.6 crore for the role of algorithms engineer during the campus recruitment drive.

The news was shared by Hrithik Talwar, a research intern at IIT Delhi, through social media. He made an announcement about a prestigious job opening but also disclosed that Zomato had quickly withdrawn their offer, causing a stir on campus.

Talwar’s viral post featured a withdrawal notification screenshot, urging students to retract their applications due to company limitations.

This unforeseen development sparked extensive online speculation and discussion. Certain users raised doubts about the authenticity of the remarkable salary offer, suggesting it could be a typographical mistake, while others pondered if it was a strategic marketing tactic by Zomato. Talwar affirmed on Twitter that the story is indeed true.

Moreover, it is important to note that Zomato is not the sole entity that has executed such an action. Major tech conglomerates such as Google and Meta have also carried out similar actions earlier this year.

In January of this year, Meta made the decision to rescind the full-time job offers extended to several individuals who were prepared to join the company. Meta acknowledged that this was a difficult choice, but it was driven by the desire to prioritize the positions that held greater significance. The rationale behind this decision appeared rather peculiar, as the company had initially gone through the hiring process before opting to retract offers from certain candidates.

A representative from Meta stated that they have decided to retract offers to a few candidates as they continue to evaluate their hiring requirements. Although this was a challenging decision, it will enable them to be deliberate in their hiring process as they realign it with their most important work until 2023.

Likewise, a Google engineer encountered a predicament when he departed from his secure position at the company led by Sundar Pichai to pursue a career at Amazon. Merely three days before his scheduled commencement at the e-commerce behemoth, the engineer received the disheartening news that his job offer had been retracted.
