In a heartfelt social media post, the 38-year-old wrote, “Hello everyone, I would just like to share, I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”

Rohit’s retirement ends a notable Test career that saw him play 67 matches, scoring 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. His transformation into a dependable opener during the latter stages of his career was one of India’s biggest gains in the format.

The decision follows growing scrutiny over Rohit’s form in red-ball cricket. According to sources, selectors had already conveyed their intent to the BCCI to appoint a new leader ahead of the upcoming England tour. Rohit’s struggles with the bat were particularly evident during recent Test series losses to Australia and New Zealand, where he averaged below 20. Notably, he opted out of the final Test of the Australia series in Sydney after a string of poor performances.

The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is reportedly looking to invest in a younger leadership core for the next World Test Championship cycle. Despite Rohit expressing his interest in continuing as Test captain during a recent podcast with former Australian skipper Michael Clarke, the selectors are firm on grooming a new captain.

While Jasprit Bumrah, India’s vice-captain, remains a strong candidate, concerns around his fitness and workload management may complicate a full-time leadership role. Other potential successors being considered include KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant—all of whom are expected to be mainstays in the Test side moving forward. Rahul has prior experience leading India in Tests, which could work in his favor.

Rohit had already bid farewell to T20 Internationals following India’s triumph in the ICC T20 World Cup last year. With this latest decision, his red-ball journey concludes, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, adaptability, and leadership.
