Going green: PMPML to run buses on compressed bio gas

Pune Municipal Corporation has set up a plant in Baner area where the civic body generates CBG from wet waste.

Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) recently flagged off buses which will run on Compressed BioGas (CBG) generated from wet waste. The pilot project was launched by Pune Municipal Corporation Commissioner Vikram Kumar; PMPML Director Laxminarayan Mishra; additional commissioner, PMC Ravindra Binawade; additional commissioner PMC Dr Kunal Khemnar and others.

Two PMPML CNG buses which will run on CBG was also launched recently. Pune Municipal Corporation has set up a plant in Baner area where the civic body generates CBG from wet waste. The capacity of the plant is 125 metric tonnes per day and the civic body plans to increase it to 200 metric tonnes soon.

The gas will be made by using wet waste collected by Noble Exchange Company which will further process it and produce Bio CNG, which will later be given to Indian Oil Petrol Pump. The buses will be filled with CBG at these Indian Oil Petrol pump.

This project is being executed by Central Petroleum and Natural Air Ministry’s Sustainable Towards Affordable Transportation Scheme in association with Indian Oil. Everyday 1000 kgs of Bio CNG will be produced at the plant based in New Auto Corner, Somatne phata. These buses were tested by Automotive Research Association India and RDE (research and development establishment) and will run on Nigdi-Lonavala route.
