Excitement gripped the City of Pune as the crescent moon made a brief appearance on Monday, March 11 2024, signalling the commencement of Ramzan, a sacred month for Muslims worldwide. Ramzan, a time of fasting from dawn to dusk, holds immense significance in Islamic tradition.

Rafiuddin Shaikh, the general secretary of the Seerat committee in Pune, officially confirmed the sighting of the moon on Monday. Following discussions among ulemas (religious scholars), Tuesday has been declared as the first day of ‘Roza’, the fast observed during Ramzan. Shaikh also mentioned that the special namaz for Ramzan, known as Taraavi, has commenced in all mosques across the city

Haji Zakir Shaikh, the President of All-India Quami Tanzeem (Western Maharashtra), emphasized that Muslims across the nation have been encouraged to observe fasting, offer prayers, engage in acts of charity and perform good deeds throughout this sacred month. He further stated that preparations are underway to host Saheri (pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (evening meal to break the fast) gatherings in homes and various venues. Importantly, Shaikh extended invitations to members of other communities to partake in these events, fostering a spirit of brotherhood and peace. He said, “Preparations are on to organize Saheri and Iftar parties in homes and many places.”

As Ramzan starts in Pune and all across, Muslims are earnestly observing the rituals and embracing the values of compassion, generosity and unity that define this auspicious month. The communal harmony and inclusive spirit exemplified by the invitation to fellow citizens reflect the essence of Ramzan as a time for reflection, gratitude and solidarity.
