The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for southern Maharashtra, predicting unseasonal rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning between March 28 and March 31. Meanwhile, the rest of the state is expected to experience a heatwave towards the end of March.

Weather Forecast for Pune

  • Higher-than-normal temperatures will continue in Pune until the end of March.
  • Cloudy weather is expected on April 1 and 2, but rain is unlikely, according to SD Sanap, Senior Meteorologist, IMD Pune.
  • On March 27, nighttime temperatures rose significantly, especially in eastern Pune.
    • Magarpatta recorded 25.3°C, one of the highest night temperatures of the season.
    • Koregaon Park: 23.4°C, Lohegaon: 23.7°C, Chinchwad: 23.6°C.
    • Shivajinagar: 19.5°C, Pashan: 19.4°C.

Drop in Daytime Temperatures

  • Lohegaon recorded 39.1°C on March 27, down from 41.4°C on March 26.
  • Shivajinagar saw a drop from 38.6°C to 36.4°C.

Rain and Thunderstorm Warning

A north-south trough (a weather system causing rainfall) extends from north-central Maharashtra to north Kerala, bringing isolated rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over central Maharashtra on March 29 and 30.

  • Yellow alert issued for Sindhudurg, Sangli, and Kolhapur on March 29.
  • Heatwave conditions are expected in Vidarbha and nearby areas by the end of March.

Maharashtra’s Hottest & Coolest Cities on March 27

  • Hottest: Bramhapuri – 42.2°C
  • Coolest: Gondia – 18.4°C

Lohegaon’s Rising Temperatures

  • On March 27, Lohegaon recorded a minimum temperature of 23.7°C, which is 6.5°C above normal.
  • The area has consistently seen 40-40.5°C daytime temperatures, possibly due to tall buildings and urban heat effects, according to a senior weather scientist. Further research is needed to understand these temperature variations within Pune.
