Maharashtra to Revoke Licenses of Hotels Running Illegal Hookah Parlors: CM Devendra Fadnavis
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced strict measures against illegal hookah parlors, emphasizing that hotels operating such establishments will face severe consequences, including permanent license revocation for repeat offenders.
Speaking in the state assembly, Fadnavis highlighted concerns about illegal hookah parlors, particularly those near college campuses, where they are suspected of facilitating drug distribution. To curb this menace, the government is strengthening enforcement against these establishments.
The state had already imposed a ban on hookah parlors in 2018, with first-time offenders facing up to three years in prison. Under the new regulations, businesses caught violating the ban a second time will have their licenses suspended for six months, while third-time offenders will face permanent cancellation and legal action.
Responding to MLA Sunil Kamble’s query regarding the legality of hookah parlors in Pune’s Koregaon Park, Fadnavis expressed concerns over increasing addiction among youth. He stated that the government aims to eliminate not just the illegal operation of these parlors but also the growing trend of hookah as a “style statement.” He further warned that police officers would be held accountable if such parlors were found operating in their jurisdiction without their knowledge.
This crackdown is part of Maharashtra’s broader initiative to combat substance abuse and safeguard public health. The state government is also intensifying its efforts against e-cigarettes and other tobacco products.
