A Mahindra Thar unexpectedly ended up in the main canal passing through Janta Vasahat in Pune on Wednesday afternoon, creating a scene that drew local attention. The incident occurred around 2:15 pm, and the vehicle was later pulled out with the help of a crane. Residents are questioning how the SUV came so close to the water and what led to it falling into the canal.
Video footage of the event has been circulating online. Remarkably, the SUV remained operational after being removed from the canal, and the owner was later seen driving it away from the spot.
This episode highlights the growing concerns about road safety in Pune, where accidents are on the rise, often due to reckless driving. In a recent tragic case, a nine-year-old girl lost her life when a Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus ran over her and her elder sister while they were crossing a road in Talawade. The elder sister sustained injuries. CCTV footage of the accident has gone viral, reigniting public discussions about traffic safety in Pune district.
The deceased girl has been identified as Sudha Lal Bihari Verma, aged 9, while her injured sister, Radha Ram Mohan Verma, is 22. Both are residents of Talawade and originally hail from Uttar Pradesh. Ram Mohan Shrisantram Verma (23, Talawade) has filed a complaint with the Dehu Road Police Station.

Authorities have detained Kiran Bhattu Jadhav Patil, 36, a native of Dhule currently living in Chikhali. He has been booked under sections 106 (causing death by negligence), 125 (acts endangering life or personal safety of others), 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988.
