Pune, September 3, 2024: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has clarified that it is not responsible for the disruptions in Pune’s water supply caused by alleged power outages affecting the city’s various water supply schemes. MSEDCL stated that despite heavy rainfall in July and August, the power supply to these schemes remained consistent. The interruptions were due to internal electrical issues and maintenance work by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) at the Parvati Water Treatment Plant, which were unrelated to MSEDCL’s services.

For critical water supply schemes like Parvati and Tukai nagar, MSEDCL provides high-voltage connections to the PMC through express power lines. On July 4, the power supply to the Parvati Water Treatment Plant was shut down for 4 hours and 38 minutes to allow the PMC to conduct internal electrical repairs. Subsequently, on August 5, a transformer malfunction in the PMC’s internal electrical system caused a 2-hour and 22-minute power outage. Another scheduled power shutdown for internal repairs took place on August 6 for 6 hours and 52 minutes. Similarly, on July 4, the power supply to the Tukai nagar water supply scheme was interrupted for 2 hours due to maintenance work by the PMC.

Additionally, MSEDCL has provided five high-voltage connections to important locations such as Khadakwasla Dam, Ganpati Math Warje, and Kakade City Warje. At the Khadakwasla Water Center, the power supply was interrupted for 50 minutes on August 3 and for 1 hour and 5 minutes on August 13 due to internal electrical issues in the PMC’s system. However, these disruptions were not related to MSEDCL. Similarly, the power supply to the Lashkar Water Supply Center under the Rastapeth division was interrupted for 30 minutes on August 22 and 15 minutes on August 24. Since July, there have been no power outages at the Padmavati and Chatushrungi hydroelectric centers.

MSEDCL has taken special precautions to ensure a consistent power supply to the water supply schemes despite the heavy rains and flood conditions over the past two months. MSEDCL’s efforts have been successful in maintaining an uninterrupted power supply to all water supply schemes in the city. Daily communication with the relevant PMC officials is maintained through email or WhatsApp groups. However, MSEDCL has observed that inadequate maintenance and repairs of the PMC’s internal electrical systems are affecting MSEDCL’s power lines and equipment.

MSEDCL emphasized that it is not responsible for the power outages due to internal electrical faults or maintenance shutdowns at the water centers. The accusations by the PMC blaming MSEDCL for the interruptions in the water supply are baseless and misleading, as an investigation has found no evidence to support these claims.
