The Himachal Pradesh High Court has issued a notice to Kangana Ranaut in response to a petition challenging her election victory from the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency.

The Himachal Pradesh High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to Kangana Ranaut, the BJP Lok Sabha member from Mandi. This follows heels with a petition that challenges her election. The petition, filed by Kinnaur resident Layak Ram Negi, claims that his nomination papers to contest from the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency were wrongfully rejected.

Justice Jyotsna Rewal, who issued the notice, directed Ranaut to file her reply by August 21. Ranaut had secured the Mandi seat by defeating Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh with a margin of 74,755 votes, polling 5,37,002 votes against Singh’s 4,62,267 votes.

The petitioner, Layak Ram Negi, an ex-employee of the forest department, argued that his nomination papers were unjustly rejected by the returning officer, the Deputy Commissioner of Mandi. Negi stated that he had provided a “no dues certificate” from his department along with his nomination papers but was later asked to submit additional certificates from the electricity, water and telephone departments. Despite submitting these documents within the given timeframe, his nomination was rejected.

Negi maintains that this rejection was improper and asserts that he could have won the election had his papers been accepted. He has requested the court to set aside the election results.

As the case proceeds, all eyes will be on the upcoming court sessions and the responses from the involved parties.
