To tackle the growing parking crisis near metro stations, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will conduct GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping to identify and expand parking facilities. The survey will cover reserved parking spaces, PMPML depots, truck terminus lands, and amenity areas within a 500-metre radius of metro stations to enhance multimodal connectivity.

Addressing Pune’s Parking Woes

Pune’s transport infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with rapid urban growth, resulting in severe congestion and inadequate parking near metro stations. The city’s current public transport system includes PMPML buses, limited BRT services, and the newly operational Pune Metro Phase 1.

With Metro Line 1 and 2 fully operational—connecting PCMC, Swargate, Vanaz, and Ramwadi—the metro now serves 1.60 lakh passengers daily. However, insufficient parking facilities remain a significant challenge for commuters.

GIS Mapping for Efficient Parking Planning

The survey will involve:

  • Data Collection: Using PMC records, Pune Metro DPRs, and existing parking lists.
  • Advanced Mapping Technology: Conducting ground surveys using DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System) and total stations for high-precision mapping.
  • Satellite Imagery Overlay: High-resolution images will help mark land ownership details and optimize parking locations.
  • Validation of Land Ownership: Ensuring accurate records for smoother parking development.

PMC’s approved Development Plan (DP) has 100 hectares reserved for parking, and the survey aims to maximize its utilization.

PMC’s Transit-Oriented Approach

According to Sandeep Patil, Executive Engineer, PMC, the civic body will compile a detailed report with findings, maps, and drawings to facilitate decision-making. The initiative aligns with Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) zones, focusing on improving accessibility within 500 metres of metro stations.

With this initiative, PMC aims to streamline parking management and enhance Pune’s public transport integration, making commuting more convenient for metro users.
