Pune: Katraj Zoo Set To Welcome Zebra
The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife Research Centre in Katraj, Pune, is gearing up to introduce zebras to its premises, enhancing the zoo’s appeal to tourists. Following the completion of a 5,000-square-meter trench, an expert committee will evaluate the feasibility of housing zebras in Pune.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has allocated Rs 1.5 crore for the project. Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale has directed the Garden Department to finalize plans based on the committee’s report.
Initially, zebras were to be sourced from Africa, but a contractor failed to meet international standards. The PMC is now exploring options from Europe and Israel, with plans to bring four zebras (two males, two females) aged three to four years.
This move is expected to significantly boost tourist numbers, as Maharashtra currently lacks zebras in its zoological parks. With a suitable environment in place, Pune is poised to become a hub for zebra conservation and entertainment.
