Marathi Language to Become Mandatory in All Schools Across Maharashtra from 2025-26
The Maharashtra government has issued a directive making the study and teaching of the Marathi language compulsory in all private and government schools, across all mediums. Starting from the 2025-26 academic year, the evaluation of Marathi language exams will be conducted using marks (grading system) rather than assessment categories.
This decision follows concerns that the Marathi language was not being taught seriously in non-Marathi medium schools, despite being evaluated through a grading system. In response, the state government has taken steps to ensure the compulsory implementation of Marathi language instruction. The education department had initially issued a government resolution on April 1, 2020, mandating Marathi as a compulsory subject in all mediums. Since the 2020-21 academic year, this has been gradually rolled out across schools in the state.
