Union Budget 2026: 7 High-Speed Rail Corridors Announced, Mumbai–Pune Line Takes Centre Stage
Mumbai and Pune are set to come closer than ever as the Union Budget 2026-27 announced a high-speed rail corridor connecting the two major cities. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the Budget on Sunday, said the Mumbai–Pune route is part of a broader plan to build seven new high-speed rail corridors across the country.
The proposed Mumbai–Pune high-speed rail aims to cut travel time significantly and offer a faster, cleaner, and more efficient travel option for daily commuters, business travellers, and tourists. The project is expected to strengthen economic ties between the financial capital Mumbai and the education and IT hub Pune.
Along with Mumbai–Pune, the other proposed high-speed rail corridors include Pune–Hyderabad, Hyderabad–Bengaluru, Hyderabad–Chennai, Chennai–Bengaluru, Delhi–Varanasi, and Varanasi–Siliguri. These routes are planned to connect major economic, industrial, and cultural centres, while promoting environmentally sustainable transport.
Highlighting the government’s focus on green mobility, Sitharaman said the new corridors will support faster passenger movement with lower environmental impact.
Big Push for Infrastructure and Logistics
Beyond passenger rail, the Budget also announced a strong push for freight and logistics. A new East–West dedicated freight corridor linking Dankuni in the east to Surat in the west was proposed to improve cargo movement. The government also plans to make 22 national waterways operational over the next five years to reduce logistics costs and promote multimodal transport.
Asset monetisation through REITs and the development of additional freight corridors are also part of the plan to improve efficiency in goods movement.
Part of a Larger Development Vision
The Finance Minister said the Budget is guided by three core duties focused on faster economic growth, building human capacity, and inclusive development. Alongside rail and freight projects, the government has proposed eco-tourism and nature-based travel initiatives, including trekking trails and wildlife-focused tourism routes in several states.
“With faster trains, improved freight movement, and sustainable tourism, India is moving towards a greener and more connected future,” Sitharaman said.
